What Is The Best Talc Particle Size For Plastic Reinforcement

For plastic reinforcement, especially polypropylene, particle size is always paired with high aspect ratio. Preserving intact lamellar flakes is more important than simply going ultra-fine.

Recommended particle size ranges

  1. General-purpose PP reinforcement (appliance housings, common injection parts)
    D50: 3–8 μm, D97 ≤15–20 μm.
This is the most widely used balance. It delivers good stiffness, heat deflection and dimensional stability, with acceptable melt flow and cost.
  2. High-performance automotive / high-surface-quality PP
    D50: 1–3 μm, D97 ≤8–10 μm.
Finer talc gives smoother molded surface, better dispersion and more uniform reinforcement. The downside is higher specific surface area, higher melt viscosity and higher compounding cost.
  3. Coarser economical talc (low-spec, non-critical PP products)
    D50: 8–12 μm.
Cheaper and easier processing, but aspect ratio tends to drop, surface finish is poorer, and reinforcement efficiency is lower.

Critical point: control the top cut (D97)

D97 is more important than D50 for plastic-grade talc. Oversized hard particles will scratch mold surfaces, create surface defects and wear extruder screws. Plastic talc must have a tight PSD and low grit residue.

How particle size interacts with aspect ratio

  • Same D50: talc with high aspect ratio lamellae gives far better stiffness and HDT.
  • Over-grinding to get extremely fine talc breaks talc flakes, reduces aspect ratio and loses reinforcement performance, even though D50 is small.

Selection guide

  • Pick D50 3–5 μm high-aspect-ratio talc for most modified PP compounds; this is the sweet spot balancing reinforcement, processability and cost.
  • Choose D50 1–3 μm for cosmetic surface, thin-wall automotive parts.
  • Use D50 6–8 μm for cost-sensitive general PP where surface quality is less demanding.

Additional requirements

  • Surface modified (stearate or silane coating) for better resin compatibility.
  • Low moisture (<0.5%), low iron, low quartz content.

The best talc particle size for plastic reinforcement is D50 3–5 μm with tight D97 top cut, combined with preserved high aspect ratio lamellar morphology. Finer grades (1–3 μm) are for premium surface-critical parts, while coarser grades (6–10 μm) work for general-purpose PP, but their reinforcement efficiency is lower.
