What Is The Best Way To Crush Talc Ore

Talc is a soft, lamellar mineral with low Mohs hardness. The best crushing strategy for talc ore is a multi-stage crushing flow that protects its natural sheet structure, liberates iron-bearing gangue, avoids over-crushing fines generation, and delivers consistent feed size for subsequent ultra-fine grinding.

1. Primary crushing: Jaw crusher for large raw ore

Large talc boulders first go through a jaw crusher for primary coarse crushing. It handles big feed size and works reliably for blocky talc ore. The jaw crusher breaks ore into 50–100 mm fragments.
Key point: Do not over-reduce particle size here. The target is only to split big rock lumps, not to produce fine powder. This keeps talc lamella intact and prevents excessive slimes.

2. Secondary crushing: Impact crusher or cone crusher

After jaw crushing, medium crushing is used to reduce particles to 10–25 mm, which is the ideal feed size for the talc ultra-fine mill.

  • Impact crusher: Preferred for talc. It generates selective crushing along mineral grain boundaries. It helps separate talc from associated iron oxides and gangue, improving monomer liberation for later magnetic separation. It is suitable for soft and medium-soft ores like talc.
  • Cone crusher: More for hard gangue-rich talc ore. It creates more compressive crushing and may produce more compact particles, but tends to damage talc’s lamellar structure if used improperly.

3. Closed-circuit screening (essential)

Vibrating screens are configured after secondary crushing to form a closed circuit. On-spec particles move forward to pretreatment and magnetic separation; oversized material returns to the secondary crusher for re-crushing. Closed screening guarantees uniform feed size and eliminates oversize hard gangue that could wear mill liners.

4. Critical operational rules for talc crushing

  1. Avoid excessive high-energy crushing. Too much impact force will shatter talc flakes and reduce the lamellar property of final talc powder.
  2. Remove tramp iron before crushing. Metal scraps damage crusher cavities and introduce extra iron contamination.
  3. Keep the crushing system enclosed to prevent external dust pollution.
  4. Match the crushing product size to the ultra-fine mill feed requirement. Too fine feed causes material agglomeration; too coarse feed reduces milling capacity and increases equipment wear.

5. Why not single-stage crushing?

Single-stage crushing cannot achieve stable particle size control. It either leaves large lumps or produces massive unwanted fine powder, which harms magnetic separation efficiency and downgrades talc lamellar morphology.

The best crushing route for talc ore is jaw primary crushing + impact secondary crushing + closed-circuit vibrating screening. This method liberates iron-bearing impurities, maintains talc’s sheet crystal structure, produces steady feed size for ultra-fine grinding, and supports the production of high-whiteness, low‑iron talc powder.
