Paint grade talc and plastic grade talc are both high-whiteness industrial talc powder, but they are tailored for different end-use systems. Their differences lie in particle morphology, particle size distribution, oil absorption, surface treatment and core performance requirements.
1. Particle morphology & lamellar structure
Paint grade talc
Focuses on good hiding power and matting effect. It retains complete lamellar flakes. The flat talc sheets form overlapping layers inside paint films, reducing gloss, improving weather resistance and preventing paint cracking. Slightly wider particle size distribution is acceptable.
Plastic grade talc
Requires intact, high-aspect-ratio lamellar crystals for mechanical reinforcement. The flake structure improves tensile strength, flexural modulus and heat distortion temperature of polypropylene and other polymers. Over-fine crushed talc flakes lose reinforcement ability. PSD must be well controlled to avoid large particles that cause surface defects.
2. Oil absorption value
Paint grade talc
Higher oil absorption is preferred. It absorbs resin and solvent, helping control paint viscosity, reducing sagging and delivering excellent matting performance.
Plastic grade talc
Lower oil absorption is required. High oil absorption consumes more resin, increases melt viscosity and makes processing difficult during extrusion and injection molding. Low oil absorption enables higher loading of talc into plastic compounds.
3. Surface modification
Paint grade talc
Usually uncoated (untreated talc). The hydrophilic surface disperses well in water-based and solvent-based paint systems. Surface treatment is optional for special high-performance coatings.
Plastic grade talc
Mostly surface-modified with coupling agents (silane or stearate coating). The hydrophobic surface improves compatibility with non-polar polymer resin, reduces agglomeration, enhances interfacial bonding and improves filler dispersion inside plastic matrix.
4. Key quality indicators
Paint grade talc: Whiteness, oil absorption, fineness, suspension property, hiding power, residue on sieve. Iron content is controlled to prevent color shift.
Plastic grade talc: Aspect ratio, D50/D97, bulk density, moisture, low coarse particles, low iron. Moisture must be strictly limited to avoid bubbles during plastic melt processing.
5. Application focus
Paint grade talc: Interior/exterior coatings, architectural paints, anti-corrosion coatings, matting paints. Main functions: matting, anti-settling, film reinforcement and cost reduction.
Plastic grade talc: PP injection molding, auto parts, household appliances, plastic sheets. Main functions: stiffness improvement, dimensional stability, heat resistance.
Paint grade talc features high oil absorption and complete lamellar structure for matting and hiding power in coating films. Plastic grade talc emphasizes high aspect ratio, low oil absorption and optional surface coating to boost polymer stiffness and melt processability. The selection of talc fineness and surface treatment is determined by the properties of paint or plastic systems.
