How To Control The Feed Rate To A Talc Mill

Stable feed rate control is critical for talc milling, whether using ball mills, ACM mills or jet mills. Proper feed rate stabilizes product fineness, protects talc lamellar structure, reduces equipment wear, keeps iron content steady and maximizes production capacity.

1. Select the right feeding equipment

Different talc mills use different feeders for continuous and adjustable feeding:

  • Screw feeder: Common for dry talc powder. It delivers steady volumetric feeding and works well for pre-ground talc entering jet mills or ACM mills.
  • Vibrating feeder: Mainly for coarse crushed talc ore going into ball mills. It handles larger particles and prevents blockage.
  • Loss-in-weight feeder (gravimetric feeder): The premium choice for high-end talc production. It measures material mass in real time and automatically adjusts feed speed. It compensates for bulk density variation caused by talc moisture or particle size change, delivering far higher accuracy than volumetric feeders.

2. Manual and automatic control methods

Manual control

Operators adjust feeder speed based on mill sound, motor current, outlet powder fineness and temperature. This is simple but less stable. It is only suitable for small-scale lines with consistent raw ore quality.

Automatic closed-loop control (recommended for modern talc plants)

PLC system continuously monitors key parameters: mill motor load, air pressure, classifier current, finished powder PSD and whiteness. When the mill load rises, the feeder reduces feed rate automatically; if the load is too low, it increases feeding. This keeps the mill running at its optimal working point.

3. Key factors affecting feed rate

  1. Raw ore hardness and gangue content: Talc mixed with quartz or iron gangue reduces mill capacity. Feed rate must be lowered to avoid overload.
  2. Feed particle size: Coarser feed needs slower feeding; finer pre-ground talc for jet mills can use a higher, controlled feed rate.
  3. Moisture: Higher moisture makes talc sticky and easy to agglomerate. Feed rate should be reduced to prevent blockage inside the mill.
  4. Target fineness: For ultra-fine talc powder, reduce feed rate to extend material residence time inside the grinding chamber.

4. Common problems caused by improper feed rate

  • Overfeeding: Mill overload, coarse product, unstable PSD, high wear, risk of material blockage.
  • Underfeeding: Wasted energy, excessive collision of grinding media, increased secondary iron contamination, and over-shattering of talc flakes.

5. Practical operational tips

  • Install buffer silos with level sensors to stabilize material head pressure before feeding.
  • Keep the material fully enclosed to avoid moisture absorption and dust interference.
  • Calibrate feeders regularly, especially after ore batch changes.
  • Combine feed rate control with magnetic separation and air classification to maintain stable whiteness and low iron content.

The best way to control talc mill feed rate is to use gravimetric loss-in-weight feeders paired with PLC closed-loop automatic control. Adjust the setpoint based on feed size, moisture, gangue content and target powder fineness. Stable feed rate protects talc lamellar structure, keeps consistent product quality and optimizes mill efficiency.
